The Bold World by Jodie Patterson is a must read. It tells the story of a woman and her life long journey told through the lens of race, gender and identity.
The reader is introduced to Jodie as she’s growing up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in the 1970’s. Her family and neighbors shape her early opinions and beliefs when it comes to gender norms and expectations. She’s raised in a house where both her mother and father encourage her to follow her dreams and that she can do anything. However, ANYTHING really meant only until she received a college degree. After that she was expected to conform to the other African American women of that age and tend to the house and family.
Jodie challenges these beliefs and is tested in a way she could never have been prepared for after the birth of her 4th child, Penelope... I won’t spoil the rest, but reading this book has given me a whole new perspective, understanding and acceptance for people who don’t look, act or feel like I do.
The world needs more open and honest stories like this. Thank you Jodie Patterson
